Tribute paid to aviation hero

Story  Susan Lambert

Guildford Cathedral was packed to capacity on June 23 when hundreds of people gathered at a service of thanks giving for the life and work of Sir George Edwards OM, CBE, FRS, DL.

The event, organised by Sir George’s daughter Angela Jeffreys, played host to an array of distinguished guests including HRH The Duke of Kent, former Prime Minister John Major, Sir Charles Masefield, and Sir Denis Rooke who represented the Queen.

Sir George, who died at the age of 94 at his home in Guildford in March, was not only famous for his contribution to aviation but was also a great sportsman, with a tremendous love of cricket, as well as a talented artist, whose work was currently displayed in Guildford Cathedral.

In his address to the congregation, Chairman of BAE Systems Plc, Sir Richard Evans, spoke of the “shock, sorrow and disbelief’ at Sir George’s passing and said that: “He had always been “bashing on”, as he would say, and expecting us to do the same.” Addresses were also made by personal friend, Sir Alec Bedser and Vice Chancellor of the University of Surrey, Professor Patrick Dowling.

Amongst his many achievements. Sir George Edwards had been Managing Director of Vickers Armstrong and the British Aircraft Corporation. He had also been President of the Surrey County Cricket Club.

After the service itself, a reception was held in a marquee on the Cathedral Green, hosted by BAE Systems Plc and the University of Surrey. During the reception, the proceedings were brought to a dramatic close as the congregation gathered excitedly to watch a VCIO fly low over the cathedral to honour the great engineer.
