Sir George Edwards OM CBE FRS DL
The Former President of Surrey County Cricket Club died at the age of 94 on 2nd March, 2003.
Sir George was elected President of the Club after a distinguished career in Aviation.
He was an outstanding aircraft designer and engineer whose timely conception of the four-engined Viscount turbo-prop airliner bridged the gap between piston-engined and pure jet aircraft; he was also an important figure in the development of Concorde.
His association with Surrey was a long one, the pinnacle of it was becoming President in 1979 although Surrey Vice President, Derek Newton, was keen to point out that, “By virtue of his background in management he was a great sounding board who had influence way beyond his one year presidency.”
Sir George quickly became friends with the Bedser twins and claimed a great cricketing triumph in 1943 when he bowled out Leary Constantine for 11, which was front-page news in a country deprived of cricket by the Second World War.
Charles Woodhouse, former president at Woodbridge Road, added: "He was easily the most distinguished member of Guildford, a truly great man. "He came from Essex and reckoned the pitches here were the very devil to bowl on. "Sir George felt that understanding the aerodynamics of leg-spin helped develop the bomb which helped the Dambusters. "He told me there was no aerodynamic reason why the top-spinner should actually sit up and stop on a batsman. "He was a terrific supporter of Guildford Cricket and a father figure to the older generation at the club."
