Associate membership of structural engineers civil engineering in the London Docks

Joined the design staff of Vickers (Aviation) Ltd as a senior designer draughtsman
Married Marjorie (Dinah) Thurgood
1938
Postgraduate course in experimental structures at the University of London
1939
Devised camouflage and protection for the Vickers-Armstrong factory in Weybridge Surrey
Given complete responsibility in the design office & workshops to devise a special version of the Wellington Bomber (the ringed Wellington)
1940
Appointed Experimental Manager
Responsible for Establishing a new facility at Foxwarren Park
1940/41
Secondment to Lord Beaverbrooks wartime ministry of aircraft production
1945
Became Chief designer in place of Rex Pierson
Awarded MBE
1948
Became Special Director Vickers-Armstrong Limited Weybridge Works
Learnt to Fly

Awarded the George Taylor Medal

Awarded British Gold Medal for Aeronautics by the RAeS

Appointed Director, General Manager and Chief Engineer at Weybridge

Became president of the Royal Aeronautical Society
Knighted (KBE) for “outstanding services to aviation”

Became Director of Vickers Research LTD
Awarded honorary fellowship of UMIST
Vice President of the Royal Society of Arts

Awarded honorary fellowship of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
Awarded the American Daniel Guggenheim medal
